Synopsis:
Amara is a professional dancer who, after having had an awakening about the non-dualism of body and soul, becomes a nudist. Her point is the body isn't shameful and can be married to the soul. But she's misunderstood, and she begins to doubt her ability to be assertive. Her assertive family voices scorn and wants her to stop. Aware of this familial contention, producers of a talk show invite Amara to face her family. As she confronts her family in front of a national audience, Amara learns the best way be assertive is not by trying to "win" but by listening.

Director's Statement: The main question this movie raises is, how do you deal with intense negativity in relationships? What’s the best way to stand up to it? And how do you have difficult conversations effectively? The tentative answer is that in the face of resistance, rather than trying to defeat, it’s best to listen and persist in the truth with love. Interestingly, even though the story opens with nudism being the point of contention, by the story’s end it becomes a symbol of the assertiveness Amara transforms into.
Lead Characters: (Each character represents a type of assertiveness)
Amara Sol, FEMALE (25-35)—Hero. Mediterranean look. Amara is a soft-spoken but cheery bohemian dancer struggling with how to be assertive. Dance (especially ballet) required. Full Nudity (non-sexual)
Kennedy Kingston, FEMALE (25-35)—Main Opponent. Blonde-hair, blue-eyes. Kennedy, Amara’s older cousin, is a buttoned-up real-estate agent who asserts herself in a passive-aggressive and at times pushy way. She harbors a deep, unspoken resentment against Amara.
Should have some dance ability.
Savannah Swanson, FEMALE (50-60)—Secondary Opponent. Blonde-hair, blue-eyes. Savannah, Kennedy and Mackenzie’s mother, is a Christian conservative fundamentalist with a big-heart who often uses emotion to assert herself.
Mackenzie Johnson, FEMALE (25-30)—Fake-Ally Opponent. Blonde-hair, blue-eyes. Mackenzie, Amara’s younger cousin who’s a beautician and teaches ballroom part-time, is neither as buttoned-up as Kennedy nor as risqué as Amara. She seems laid back and to support Amara…at first. Should have some dance ability.
Brody Johnson, MALE (30-35)—Tertiary Opponent. Brody, Mackenzie’s husband, is a yuppie pharmaceutical salesman who has an aggressive assertiveness style.
George Allen, MALE (50-60)—Fake-Opponent Ally. George is a talk show host who could pass for a Phil Donahue or Jerry Springer type and tries to moderate this family conflict. He seems to side with Amara’s conservative family. Must be able to do a mean Michael Buffer (the “Let’s get ready to rumble” boxing announcer).
Heph Eroso, MALE (40-45)—Ally. Heph is a rugged, nerdy philosopher type who produces the show Amara is a dancer in and is her fiancé. He encourages her to assert herself by listening, not by “besting.” Must be in good physical shape.
Partial Nudity (non-sexual)
Shy Adams, FEMALE (35-40)—Ally. Shy, Amara’s good friend, is an ex-porn star, an assertive bad-ass, and a professional dancer who co-stars in Heph’s show. She’s probably decorated in tats and piercings. Must be able to dance.
Full Nudity (non-sexual)
Miles Kingston, MALE (35-45)—Subplot Character. Miles, Kennedy’s husband, is a mild-mannered, scruffy record store owner who’s not exactly a paragon of assertiveness, but by the end of the play he finds a way to stand up for himself (and for Amara).
Must be able to do both a Dublin and a Norfolk English accent.
Roman Forte, MALE (40-50)—Subplot Character. Roman, Shy’s fiancé, is a hot-headed professional boxer who expresses his assertiveness physically, and wants Shy to stop being nude. Must have a strong, physical presence.
Supporting Roles: (Featured Audience Members)
"Boston Red Sox Fan," or Male Audience Member #1: During a “Theater of the Absurd” sequence in the film, he runs across the stage dressed in "Boston Red Sox" gear cheering!
"New York Yankees Fan", or Male Audience Member #2: Dressed in "New York Yankees' gear", he tries to beat up the "Red Sox Fan" during the same sequence.
Husband, or Male Audience Member #3: Introverted husband of Female Audience Member #3 (see below).
Male Audience Member #4: 45-50, an African American who tries to help Amara and her aunt Savannah to reconcile.
Female Audience Member #1: 50s, an Asian-American (non-specific) asks why Amara’s ethnicity (Amara has a darker look) is different from her cousins and aunt (who are all blonde-hair, blue eyes).
Female Audience Member #2: 30s, denounces Amara’s nudism, demonstrating that some in the audience still misunderstand Amara’s perspective by the end of the talk show.
Female Audience Member #3: 45, Caucasian. On behalf of her blushing husband, she asks if Amara can give an encore performance of her dance. Her question provides levity during the Audience Q & A.
Female Audience Member #4: 25, Hispanic, questions Shy about wrinkles: would she still go nude?
Female Audience Member #5: 25. Italian. In a show of solidarity and an understanding of Amara’s perspective, she flashes her breasts to the audience. Must be able to do an Italian accent. Brief Partial Nudity (breasts only, non-sexual)
Female Audience Member #6: 25, Indian, challenges Amara about bringing her nudity to her family and on national television. Her question also leads to the subplot resolution between Miles and Kennedy where he stands up to Kennedy and also helps his wife reconcile with Amara.
Strong improv and/or theater background a plus. Dancers (particularly ballet background) encouraged to apply.
Also, we will be seeking male and female background extras local to Portland, ME of all ages. Extras casting will be in early December 2019.
